K-6 Career Day Activities
Hat Day /Military Day/ Tool Day/ Uniform Day/ Vehicle Day
There are different names you can put on a career fair day. The above listed career days, follow the same format, but are themed slightly differently. Multiple professionals visit your school to not just talk about their careers, but to share their career information in a hands-on manner geared to your chosen theme. For example, during vehicle day, community professionals visit your school with their occupational vehicle: fire engine, hearse, tow truck, ambulance, utility truck, taxi, shuttle, bus, helicopter, etc. This activity allows for the students to hear, touch, see climb in, on and out of vehicles, etc. all while learning about careers. According to your predetermined rotation schedule, groups rotate to each of the selected presenters during the career fair.
Tips for Success
- Remind presenters to keep their presentations to the developmental level of the student audience. As a teacher, you can provide this insight.
- Develop a student worksheet for the activity. A worksheet will help students stay on task and guide them to ask appropriate questions of the working professional. The worksheet should not be so difficult that the students cannot enjoy the interaction with the presenter.
- Small groups encourage more interaction between the students and the professional.
- Most of these types of career fairs can be held inside in the regular classroom, lunchroom, auditorium or gymnasium. However, vehicle day requires a large parking lot for the vehicles. This would need to be arranged for in advance.
- Weather needs to be taken into account when planning activities outdoors. Have a back-up activity planned, so students are not disappointed, such as Vehicle day can turn into hat day and be moved inside the school.
