10.5.4 updates fixes 10.5.3 bugs!
Very soon those of us running Mac OS X leopard will notice another operating system update has just been released. 10.5.4 was released to the public June 30th. If you are thinking “didn’t I just install one of these updates” then you probably did. This represents a rapid turnaround for Mac OS X version updates, with the last point upgrade released just one month ago (May 28th).

Many of the bugs that plagued 10.5.3 have been fixed in this update. The update specifically addresses issues with the Adobe Creative Suite, Airport, iCal, Safari, Spaces and Exposé. For those of you that waited to install 10.5.3, initial testing show 10.5.4 to be a reliable and stable update that everyone should install.

In order to run the update you need to click on the apple at the top left of your screen and select “Software Update...”. A box will appear searching for updates and then tell you that and update is available. Click install and then accept the license agreement. This update will require you to restart your computer. As with all major updates, back-up your important files before installing.

Technology Integration Meeting Notes
The meeting started with Ted explaining that the role of the School Technology Specialists needs to be re-evaluated. There will be no more Tech Integration Meetings except under a different goal and vision. The next School Tech meeting will ask the question of whether there should be Technology Integration Specialists and, if so, what their role should be. Suggestions were made to improve the group and refocus where they are most effective. Some examples of suggestions are:

Technology Integration Meeting Notes
Our Technology Director, Ted Kelly, started off the meeting by welcoming everyone. He started by saying that he is happy about the advancements in technology that we have made in the past year. Every Administrator and Principal has been issued a new computer to upgrade their older, out of date computers. He also said that each principal now has a "tech mentor" assigned to them from his district office staff. The tech mentor is to help the principal with computer issues when needed and teach them basic computer skills. Tech mentor classes are held every month. The tech support department will also be visiting each school to make sure that there are no holes in the network during e-testing. tech support will make the support of e-testing a priority and be available to help with any problems. Ted asked what the schools may need or want as far as electronic teaching tools. He suggested that each school tech representative think about this and come up with ideas for the next meeting to be held in 3 weeks. He said that later in the meeting he would have Rem and Bryce give each school tech an assignment to host a technology open house at their school.

Dawn Schmidt explained that she is getting too many calls from teachers and reminded the school techs to inform the principals and teachers at their schools that only those on the call list are to phone the help desk.

Jim Parkin told everyone about the upcoming UCET (Utah Coalition for Educational Technology) Conference at Taylorsville High School on February 29 and March 1. More information can be obtained, including registration and schedule at www.ucet.org. The renowned David Pogue, a New York Times technology columnist, will be the keynote speaker. David's blog and video podcast can be found at pogue.blogs.nytimes.com

Rem and Bryce talked about the assignment to be given to each school tech integration specialist. The assignment being a technology open house for each school inviting the public to come and see what amazing things they are doing with technology. Each school will need to set a date and time for the open house and prepare a short presentation. Ideas were shared about what and how the schools might present in their open house.

Jim spoke with the group about Contribute CS3. He reminded them that all schools have access to Contribute for teachers to do their class web pages. He has visited with each principal about deploying Contribute in their school. If teacher want to get started on their web page, but do not have Contribute, they can talk to their principal, who, in turn, can contact Jim.

David Op'Thof reviewed the Pearson Math Software with the group.

The next School Technology Integration Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 28.
