District School Construction Projects
Numerous bonded construction projects with Provo City schools either are well underway, or have been completed in recent months, enabling faculty and students to enjoy and make the most of these fine facilities. New construction at Centennial Middle School and Sunset View Elementary are complete, and the all-new Lakeview Elementary and Timpanogos Elementary in west Provo are ahead of schedule in the completion process. Renovation projects at other district schools, such as Edgemont Elementary, Provost Elementary, and Wasatch Elementary, have been completed during 2007. Phase I of Provo High School’s renovation is also complete, with Phases II and III to come the next two summers.
In October 2007, the Board of Education voted to close Grandview Elementary at the end of the current school year, and boundary decisions for Provo’s west side schools will be completed in the near future.
The School Board, along with district administration and staff, are indebted and grateful to the citizens of Provo City for their Bond support that has made possible these beautiful educational buildings.
Background on Master Plan Development
Planning and data collection for the Provo School District Master Plan commenced in the late fall of 2003. In December of that year, the Provo School Board hired Wikstrom Economic Planning to serve as consultants in the master plan process. After a few months of data analysis, a Master Plan Committee of 60 patrons from the community addressed demographic and building condition data. In September 2004, the Committee presented five possible “scenarios” or approaches to the master plan at a public open house.
Acting on information provided by the master plan committee and input from the open house, the Board of Education began a series of discussions that resulted in the Master Plan Outline that can be found on this web page. The Board again went to the public in an open house format to receive input concerning the plan. From this input, in November 2004, the Board of Education unanimously approved and advanced the Master Plan. At the same time, the Board enacted Phase I of the plan which closed Farrer Middle School with intent to re-open it as a central city elementary school at the start of the 2005-06 school year. This phase of the Master Plan was completed in August 2005, with former Farrer students now attending Centennial and Dixon Middle Schools, and the newly remodeled Farrer Elementary open to former Joaquin Elementary and Oakridge students.
Phase II and Phase III of the Master Plan have since moved forward to the present day. The major event that has made the district's facilities Master Plan possible was the Bond and Leeway election which was voted and approved by the public in June 2006.
